Peter F. Kappel, B.A.Sc., P.Eng., LL.B.

Peter Kappel has practised exclusively in the field of intellectual property law since 1984, and devotes a substantial portion of his practice to litigation matters. He has successfully counselled clients in respect of intellectual property transactions and all manner of intellectual property disputes. He has appeared as counsel in numerous actions involving patents, trademarks, copyright, unfair competition, judicial review applications, trade secrets and related employment and commercial litigation before the Federal Court of Canada and the Superior Court of Justice for Ontario, at both trial and appellate levels. Mr. Kappel has also assisted on and has been counsel on briefs for intellectual property matters before the Supreme Court of Canada.

Mr. Kappel is approved by Lawyers' Professional Indemnity Company as defence counsel for professional liability insurance in claims and repairs involving intellectual property.

He also has experience developing and managing several international trademark portfolios.

Peter Kappel is a devoted and accomplished user of computer technology in his practice, including, voice recognition software, litigation support systems, and practice management systems.

Education :

  • Peter F. Kappel received his Bachelor of Applied Science degree (Chemical Engineering) from the University of Waterloo in 1977.
  • He was granted a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Windsor in 1982.

Professional Qualifications:

  • Called to the Bar of the Province of Ontario in 1984.

  • Effective June 13, 1996, the Law Society of Upper Canada certified Mr. Kappel as a Specialist in Intellectual Property (Patent, Trade-Mark & Copyright) Law.

  • Registered Canadian and United States Patent Agent.

  • Registered Canadian Trademark Agent.

  • Recognized as a Trademark Practitioner before the United States Trademarks Office.

  • Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario.

  • Member of The Law Society of Upper Canada Certification Commitee for IP Specialists.
